XBLA Indie Game Review – Cthulhu Saves the World

I will forever be a sucker for a good 8 or 16-bit RPG.  They take me back to my roots of gaming, the place where I was always the hero, always got the girl, and was always loved.  When I saw Zeboyd Games’ “Cthulhu Saves the World” available on Xbox Live Arcade’s Indie games, I couldn’t resist delving in.  I’m glad I did.


You play as Cthulhu … yes, THAT Cthulhu.  In the moment of your ascension to ruler of the world, a mysterious wizard appears and steals your power.  Upon realizing this, Cthulhu doesn’t just break the fourth wall, he tears it down, stomps it to ash, and spits on its remains.  He listens, intently, for the narrator to describe what must be done and upon learning that he must first become a “true hero” in order to gain his powers back, he sets off doing the one thing nobody expects … helping people.


Sticking to what makes a classic RPG playable, “Cthulhu Saves the World” sticks with turn-based combat.  Attack & Magic are the mainstays in every RPG, but Zeboyd Games adds their own spin with a  TECH option.  TECH is a unique group of skills unique to each individual adventurer (you get many) that will unleash a devastating attack, dangerous debuff, or beneficial buff to your party.  Also included are UNITE abilities.  This allows any two characters, at the cost of their combat action, to perform a powerful combination attack much like a UNITE ability, but devastatingly powerful.

As you progress, you gain companions, undertake quests, fight battles, and gain loot.  Everything that makes an RPG great has been added.

Graphics and Sound

While you won’t have amazing graphics or window shattering sound, I didn’t expect it.  I know what I like about classic RPG’s and I know what to expect.  Every pixel is in the right place and every bleep or bloop only added to my experience.


While this doesn’t have any sort of ground-breaking, earth-shattering gameplay, I loved every minute of it.  The adjustable difficulties and added bonus game types certainly give enough content to warrant a price tag of 240 Microsoft Points ($3 USD).  If you’re looking to sink 6-10 hours of gameplay into a game that is both affordable and entertaining, do not pass up “Cthulhu Saves the World”.
